Meet the Teacher!

I am blogging obsessed! I have been “stalking” a few blogs for a couple of months now. The last week or so, I have been digging in deeper. I will visit a blog and then look at all of the blogs that person follows. Then, I’ll look at all of the blogs one of those people follow. Before I know it, I’ve got like 30+ windows opened in my browser! I’ve been downloading lots of goodies from all of the very generous teachers out there. I seriously cannot fathom how teachers taught back before the internet!
I decided to join in the Meet the Teacher party started over at The First Grade Parade.
That’s me! I’m Ashley. I teach first grade and I love rainbows (see my rainbow quilt and pillows?!). I’m 28 years old. I’m the daughter to two awesome parents and big sister to a senior in high school. That’s right – 10 years difference between me and my sis. I live in Western Kentucky and am married to a Canadian! He’ll hopefully have his U.S. Citizenship in a year. We met each other online in a Yahoo Group back in 2001. We got married on Father’s Day 2006.
We are proud parents to a one year old, tortoiseshell kitty named Annabelle. We adopted her from PetSmart after my cat of almost 20 years passed away last March.

I’ve been teaching for six years. My first year was in a second & third multiage classroom. The next two years I spent as computer lab instructor (not an official “teaching” position :P). The last three years I have been in first grade. First grade has been my favorite! My mom is an aide in a kindergarten class at another school. She helps me a lot with my classroom including helping to put bulletin boards up!

I graduated from Murray State University in 2005. I’m currently pursuing my Master’s degree from there as well in Instructional Computer Technology. I am the webmaster of my school’s website. My husband graduated from the University of Kentucky and he is the instruction librarian at our local community college.
I love rainbows, cute things, board games, movies, Etsy, Ebay, Disney pins, the internet, arts and crafts, and shopping! I love all things Alice in Wonderland!

Now for the Q & A!
Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t a teacher?
A:  If I could make a living out of it, I would be an artist/crafter. I would love to spend my days making “things” and going to craft fairs and shows to sell them!
Q: What are your hobbies?
A:  Lesson planning. 😛 Shopping, arts and crafts, surfing the internet.
Q: When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A:  I always wanted to be a teacher. I LOVED playing school as a kid. In middle school I went through a phase where I wanted to be a meteorologist or tornado chaser. In high school I considered becoming a forensic pathologist and working in a morgue. Teaching won out!

Q: What are your guilty pleasures?

A: Shopping, especially for bargains! Target, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s. Cookies, candy, cute things. TV shows. Art supplies. Canadian Dry Ginger Ale (not because my husband is from Canada!) Ink pens, notepads, pencils, etc. 😀
Q: What is your biggest fear?!
A: Failure. Failing myself, my family, or my students.
Q: When you’re on vacation, where do you like to go?
A: Disney World!! I would LIVE there inside the park if I could!

Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

A:  Don’t give up, be yourself. Treat others the way you want to be treated. If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. Take what you get and don’t throw a fit (first grader taught me this one!). The grass may be greener on the other side, but the other side still grows weeds! (I actually gave myself that advice!)
Q: What do you value most in others?
A:  Honesty, kindness, respect, the willingness to share.
Q: If you would choose one of your personality traits to pass down to your kids, what would it be?
A: My creativity
Q: If you could have lunch with anyone in the world…..living or dead…. who would it be?
A:  First of all, I hope it’s a longer lunch than I get at school! The time flies by during lunch! This sort of question is always hard for me. For one thing, I am very picky about the things I eat, so I would probably be nervous about eating in front of whoever it was. I guess I’d say someone from my family or Duran Duran (my favorite band!) or the Mad Hatter (I know he’s not real!). Lunch with the Mad Hatter would be interesting I’m sure.
Now tell us one random thing about yourself:
I can bark like a dog really well. I can burp the alphabet on command. I have Art ADD (have so many ideas and projects in my mind but can’t seem to complete them all!). I’m obsessed with my classroom at school. I HATE sports!! My husband and I went to the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party this past October and we dressed as the Cheshire Cat (me) and the Mad Hatter (him). See our goofy faces below.
Now it’s time for YOU to join the party!!!!  Here’s what you need to do:  Write a post titled “Meet The Teacher”.  Start with a brief “biography” and then copy & paste the Q&A {using your answers, of course!}  Copy the web address of your “Meet the Teacher” post and come back here & link up!  It would be GREAT if you could visit at least 3 other teachers…get to know a little bit about your fellow bloggers…and leave a comment!!!! Don’t forget to grab a button when you link up!!
