Thanksgiving Phonics Mystery Pictures
Happy November!
I hope your school is lucky enough to have a short week the week of Thanksgiving. My district usually has teachers and students in school on Monday and Tuesday of that week. Because it’s a two day school week, we would take a short break from our reading series and do some review or catch up activities in reading and math (while squeezing in some fun holiday activities as well!).
I’m sure most of you have your tried and true, go-to holiday resources, but this month I’d like to offer you something new to use with your class!
This set of Thanksgiving Phonics Mystery Pictures contains ten different mystery pictures. Each one covers different phonics skills. Students read and color the word in each square according to the color code at the bottom of the page.
Phonics skills included for practice are: words with short vowels (CVC words), long vowel words (CVCe words), long vowel words (with various long vowel pairs), blends, endings, and digraphs, and r-controlled words (-or, -ar, -er, -ur, etc.).
The ten mystery pictures included feature fun, seasonal images such as: a Pilgrim, a Native American, a turkey, a cooked turkey, a drumstick, an acorn, a cornucopia, a ship, pumpkin pie, and some corn.
I’ve mentioned before that I think it’s super important to squeeze in some writing practice whenever possible so these mystery pictures come with an optional writing activity. Students choose six words from their mystery picture page and write a sentence with each. A simple activity, but it does add more to the mystery page and it gives students a choice in what they write about.
