Winter Games Activities – The Great Sports Competition
Happy February! January was sort of crazy around here, weather-wise. We had nice spring-like weather with warmer days and then days with ice, sleet, and snow! I think more snow might be on the way here in Kentucky. I wonder if that pesky Groundhog will see his shadow or not…..
And….
The Olympics are coming! The Winter Games are my favorite, and as a kid, my friends and I used to play figure skating at recess. So much fun! My son’s birthday is also this month and since he LOVES flags and the Olympics are coming, we’re planning a flag themed birthday party!
This month’s free “treasure” is one I am super excited about! I have included some fun activities to use in your class/at home to help celebrate the Winter Games.
The Great Winter Sports Competition contains a lot of fun, quick and no/low prep activities to use in your classroom during the Winter Games. There is a little bit of everything included: writing, phonics, and math.
A fun word search is included, a pattern practice page, and an ABC order page to sort winter sports themed words into alphabetical order. Students also have to write the word for a bit of handwriting practice. I have also included a medal tracker. The countries of the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom are included as well as the host country for 2018 – South Korea. I included the countries that are most likely to download and use this file, however, I did leave a blank spot. If you’re from a different country, you’d like to track another specific country, or you want to use this in the future and add that year’s host country, simply print off a small flag from the internet. Glue or tape it onto a printed copy of the medal tracker before printing for your students. Don’t forget to add the name above to match the others!
I included a fun graphing activity so you can discover what winter sports your class likes the most! Voting cards are included so you can collect data from your students. There are two graph pages included so you can choose which one best fits your needs. I know kids love talking about their favorite sports and a graph is a great way to find out who likes which sports!
I also included a few writing pages. Two are opinion writing pages where students choose between two different sports and write about their favorite and why. Two “Simply Sentences” pages are included where students color the pictures and practice writing amazing sentences! (See more about Simply Sentences here.)
Last but not least, who doesn’t love Mystery Pictures?! Twelve different pictures are included: 6 math and 6 phonics.
Mystery Pictures that are included are:
- Adding up t0 10
- Subtracting from 10
- Mixed adding and subtracting to/from up to 10
- Adding up to 20
- Subtracting from up t0 20
