Grow Capsule Fun! Free Writing and Science Activity
Way back when (in 2011 to be precise), I created a quick, fun writing activity to go along with an idea I had seen online. The idea was to give your students a grow capsule – you know, one of those little plastic pill-like things you can find for cheap the Dollar Tree or Dollar Store that when submerged in water turn into little sponges. I wanted a quick, engaging activity that would motivate my students to write. They actually had a lot of fun doing it, and came up with some creative writing responses.
I actually quietly updated this freebie last year and uploaded it to my site, but never really mentioned anything about it. I decided to make a post to let new readers know about the activity, and to explain the updates.
Originally, it was just the writing page. Students glue on their sponge and write about whatever creature or animal their sponge turned out to be. I have since added an “experiment” page because, well, science! It allows them to make predictions, test, and then observe to see what happens to their grow capsule. It just “beefs” the whole thing up a bit more and makes it a bit more exciting too. Who doesn’t like “experiments?”
